What the exam covers

Five domains, and where candidates slip.

Study in the order the content outline weights them, and watch for the mistakes that cost the most points.

  1. 01

    Scientific Foundation

Neurobiology, genetics, pharmacokinetics, and human development.

Common mistakeMemorizing drug lists without the mechanism behind them.

  2. 02

    Diagnosis and Treatment

DSM-5-TR differentials, choosing a medication, and monitoring it safely. Usually the largest domain.

Common mistakeJumping to a drug when labs or a referral was the better answer.

  3. 03

    Primary Care and Psychopathology

Medical conditions that look psychiatric, comorbidities, and the full workup.

Common mistakeMissing a medical cause, such as a thyroid problem, behind the symptoms.

  4. 04

    Psychotherapy and Interventions

Therapeutic communication, therapy models, and group and family approaches.

Common mistakeChoosing the response that gives advice instead of exploring the patient’s view.

  5. 05

    Legal, Ethical and Professional Practice

Consent, confidentiality, scope of practice, duty to warn, and quality improvement.

Common mistakeForgetting that scope of practice is set by your state board of nursing.

For the exact weight of each domain, check the current test content outline from your board, since the percentages change between versions.

The study sequence

Start from where you are.

Your plan depends on how far your exam is and whether you have tested before.

  1. 3+ months out

    Never tested

Take one full-length practice exam first, then study the domains in weight order.

  2. 4 to 8 weeks out

    Tested once

Focus on your two weakest domains and run timed, mixed question blocks every week.

  3. Under 3 weeks or retaking

    Final stretch

Timed blocks only. Review every miss, and confirm your board’s retake rules.

Three jobs every week

  • Learn: cover the next domain in outline order.
  • Retrieve: answer timed questions without notes.
  • Record: log every miss and why you missed it.

Pick your runway

  • 4 weeks12 to 15 hours a week
  • 6 weeks8 to 10 hours a week
  • 8 weeks6 to 8 hours a week
  • 12 weeks4 to 6 hours a week
